Nervous System Regulation
Resources for widening the channel, restoring flow, and building capacity for calm
The River Analogy
The above photos of the beautiful Deschutes River in Bend, Oregon were taken by yours truly.
Your nervous system is like a river. It is always moving, always responding to the landscape around it. In moments of stress or overwhelm, it can feel like the tight, rushing rapids: powerful, chaotic, and compressed into too small a space for the amount of energy moving through. As we begin to regulate, the river widens. There are still boulders (life’s obstacles) but the water has more room to breathe; it flows around what arises with greater steadiness and less force. And with deeper coherence, the river becomes broad and calm. It still moves forward with purpose, but without tension or urgency.
These three states live within all of us. Regulation isn’t about forcing calm. It’s about giving your inner river enough space, awareness, and support to find its natural flow.
Recommended Resources
While somatics and nervous system regulation are not my primary area of expertise, the teachers below are true experts in the field. I’ve taken each of their online courses myself and confidently recommend them.
Irene Lyon: Irene and her husband Seth are lovely Canadians who have been creating Somatic Experiencing online course for almost two decades. They have a variety of level for capacity, education, and engagement. This is a wonderful place to start.
Sarah Baldwin Coaching: Kind and gentle approach.
Holistic Life Navigation: Luis specialises in how nutrition, ADHD, and addiction relate to the nervous system. His story is fascinating, but if you want a grounded human who makes you feel incredibly seen and safe, this is the person!
Primal Trust: For those with Chronic Illnesses and environmental/chemical sensitivities. The premise of Primal Trust is that having a limbic injury in the brain keeps you in the loop of dysregulation and a lack of safety in one’s own body. Here is the podcast describing the work.
The Body Wisdom Academy: A holistic education platform offering grounded, science-informed training in nervous system regulation, somatic awareness, and embodied healing practices that support sustainable transformation from the inside out. Small group coaching is available, or you can work one-on-one with a practitioner.
Emily Furgason is a talented BWA Certified Practitioner who will help you tap your way to releasing the root cause of the limited beliefs that are ruling your life.
The Internal Family Systems Model (IFS Institute): IFS is a therapeutic framework that understands the mind as made up of different “parts” (protective parts, wounded parts, striving parts) all working to keep you safe. Rather than trying to fix or eliminate these parts, IFS helps you build a relationship with them from your centered, calm Self. From this place of clarity and compassion, protective patterns soften, old wounds can release, and your system reorganizes around coherence instead of defense.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Nervous system regulation is the practice of bringing your body out of chronic stress states and back into balance.
Your nervous system is constantly scanning for safety or threat. When it feels safe, you experience clarity, creativity, connection, and grounded expansion. When it feels overwhelmed, you move into fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown. Regulation is not about “calming down.” It’s about restoring coherence between your body, mind, and energy.
-
Because your nervous system determines what you can receive.
It shapes:
How you respond to stress
Your capacity for intimacy and connection
Your ability to build sustainable success
Your access to intuition and creativity
Your physical healing and resilience
If your system is dysregulated, growth feels unsafe. If your system feels safe, expansion becomes natural.
In the RBR framework, regulation creates the foundation that makes Release possible, Build sustainable, and Receive accessible.
-
You may experience:
Anxiety or constant mental overactivity
Fatigue or shutdown
Reactivity in relationships
Chronic tension or inflammation
Feeling disconnected from yourself
Difficulty receiving support, love, or opportunity
Dysregulation isn’t a flaw. It’s often a brilliant adaptation to past stress.
Regulation simply helps your system update. -
Your nervous system and your energetic field are deeply connected. When your physiology is tense, your energy contracts. When your body feels safe, your energy expands.
Practices like breathwork, Biofield Tuning, somatic awareness, and intentional release help recalibrate both the physical nervous system and the subtle energy field. This is where grounded science meets conscious awareness.
-
Yes! You already do, often unconsciously. The goal is not perfection. It’s awareness.
Simple tools can support regulation:
Conscious breathing
Slow, rhythmic movement
Time in nature
Safe connection with others
Orienting to your environment
Structured release practices
The more you practice, the more your baseline shifts toward safety and coherence.
-
No. A regulated nervous system can experience stress — and recover.
Regulation builds resilience, not fragility.
It increases your capacity to stretch without snapping, to expand without collapsing. This is what allows grounded expansion.
-
You may notice:
Faster recovery after stress
Less reactivity in conversations
Greater emotional range without overwhelm
Clearer decision-making
More ease in your body
Increased capacity to receive joy
Regulation often feels subtle at first. It’s less about intensity and more about stability.
-
Regulation is the soil.
Release clears stored charge.
Build creates a new internal structure.
Receiving becomes possible when the body trusts expansion.Without regulation, change feels destabilizing.
With regulation, transformation feels integrated.
